Many video subscription platforms today like Netflix and Hulu impose barriers on viewers, content owners and brands. Viewers are subject to rising subscription costs, needing to pay for content they do not watch, lack of incentives to watch commercials and they have little control over their personal data. Meanwhile, content owners and advertisers are losing audience data and billions of dollars due to piracy, fraud and fees taken by intermediaries.
DIVAN.TV wants to correct these issues of traditional over-the-top (OTT) video streaming services. Their upcoming blockchain-based video streaming platform is designed to benefit everyone in the ecosystem, viewers, content owners, and brands alike. The company’s existing video platform has been operational since 2012 and has more than 2 million registered users worldwide
The new, decentralized platform, led by founder Andrey Kolodyuk, is due to launch next year and is designed to achieve a number of things:
The company plans to operate DIVAN.TV as a freemium model and will reward viewers with tokens for watching ads (which can be spent to buy premium content). Users will be able to control and sell their personal data to the extent they so wish.
The whitepaper states that content owners will receive 50% of the revenue for advertising (5 to 7 times more than what they get today on existing OTT platforms like YouTube). They will get funding directly from users, can independently promote their television channels and films, crowdfund from their fans, and not be dependent on conditions set by middlemen.
Small and medium brands will purportedly be able to take advantage of the 1.7 billion Smart TV audience with no Adblock, participate at lower costs, and interact with the audience in real time.
DIVAN.TV’s goal is to remove a number of intermediaries from the market and allow content to be distributed and consumed between participants directly through Ethereum smart contracts. If the project comes to life, this will be the first time that the video streaming market will be free of monopoly and the distribution of television channels and movies will be controlled by individual participants.
