GPU shortage touches Nvidia and AMD again

From this summer onwards, the shortage of GPUs or graphics cards AMD and Nvidia could not lift its head. It has been due to constant delays in its manufacture of the DDR5, DDR5X and HBM2 memories that the main manufacturers Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix suffer at the moment. The high demand for graphics cards for the mining of crypto coins, such as Ethereum, Monero and Zcash, has made all the stores worldwide. Currently, they are served with a dropper in Europe and it is not known when new units will arrive.

To Nvidia in the month of September, it touched of plenary. Its most popular models for mining like the GTX 1060 6G, GTX 1070 8G, GTX 1080ti 11G, are in short supply in all major European computer stores and distributors. It is not expected that there will be a remittance of large units to be replenished for sale.

In principle, the GDDR5 and GDDR5X memories are easier to acquire by the GPU assemblers. Both MSI, ASUS, ZOTAC, XFX and GigaByte, see how they can not cope with the brutal demand of crypto miners, since 95% of the sales are for the mining of crypto coins and not to play video games.

HBM2 memories are more complicated to manufacture and there is less fluidity in their distribution, which is why Nvidia uses GDDR5 for its basic models and GDDR5X for high-end models.

AMD is thrown into the pool by introducing the ultra-fast HBM2 into their VEGA Radeon with the result that their stores are already empty and there are few units left for sale. Lately, MSI has released its VEGA version and will soon run out of units.

Gamer community attacks crypto coins mining with Nvidia

Several videos on YouTube speak complaining about the few units on sale that are worldwide of AMD rx580 8G graphics cards or the Nvidia 1070 8GB and the new VEGA, boycotting all the sales and distribution centers crying out unison that they stop selling GPU’s to users for mining purposes. Such a draft in some cases that even the most famous sellers on the internet and worldwide distribution have limited to 2 units per person. Several countries are currently vetoed.

Famous gamers are against the final use that the crypto miners are going to give them, saying that sooner or later this whole structure will fall by the price decrease of Bitcoin and other crypto coins.

The issue is that a general price increase is expected due to the massive demand for these memories used in all models of AMD and Nvidia. Also, the vast majority of memory production is being absorbed to a large extent by the mobile market, where the devices come out with more NAND memory, which has caused a generalized shortage and a fairly steep increase of the Gigabyte cost that we have all noticed a few months until now.

It is normal that the demand has risen due to the crises and financial problems that some countries have. People are using other forms of work and we are seeing a great massification of knowledge of this whole crypto monetary system. A few months ago, few knew what Bitcoin and other crypto coins like Ethereum or Litecoin and that one can earn some money if he is able to make working his computer from home equipped with GPU’s.

An even shorter year-end for Nvidia

The manufacture of the GDDR5 and GDDR5X memories should at first not alert any graphics card assembler since they are expected to be mounted and distributed. The novelty is that by the end of this year 2017 and for the entry of 2018 we will be able to see the newly released chips of the oven more expected: the memories GDDR6 and GDDR6X.

These will compete with the HBM3 which by the way will soon see Nvidia use them for AI computation, artificial intelligence as it already does with their Nvidia Volta, maybe decide to include them in their personal computer versions and compete with AMD.

To say that we are going to have a scarce year end of GPU AMD and Nvidia is for some a torment and for others a loss of business. The vast majority of gamers will still be able to enjoy their games because for use with just one or two units, it is more than enough to run any mid-high-end video game.

For those of us who really like to work in crypto coins mining, we’re going to have a little bit more difficulty with not having enough units available at the same time. Using multiple brands with different voltages and speeds leads to added instability and overloading of components.

In the ga, e of mine you choose well before you buy.

We will be watching to see where the new winds are blowing.
